Build vs. subscribe: when a custom portal actually beats GlossGenius or ChowNow
Every vertical we build for has a cheap, mature SaaS alternative already. Here's the honest math on when a flat-retainer custom system wins — and when it doesn't.
If you run a restaurant, salon, or outfitter business in Wyoming, you've already been pitched a booking or ordering app. They're not bad products — most are cheap, well-built, and easy to turn on this afternoon. So before we pitch a custom system, it's worth being straight about what you'd be replacing.
Restaurants: killing the 30% delivery-app commission
Direct-ordering SaaS already solves the third-party-commission problem without any custom build:
| Platform | Monthly | Commission | Angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owner.com | $249–499 | 0–5% | All-in-one, incl. branded app |
| ChowNow | from $119 | 0% direct | 30+ POS integrations |
| Popmenu | $179–499 | 0% | SEO-driven menu pages |
| BentoBox | $49 | $99/order + 3% | Cheap headline, expensive at volume |
| Sauce | $149 | 0% | Commission-free delivery logistics |
Salons: booking, intake, and no-shows
| Platform | Monthly | Processing |
|---|---|---|
| GlossGenius | $24–148 | 2.6% flat |
| Vagaro | from $23.99 + $10/staff | 2.2–3.5% |
| Boulevard | $158–369 /location | — |
| Square Appointments | free–$49 | — |
Outfitters: reservations, waivers, and gear tracking
| Platform | Fee model |
|---|---|
| FareHarbor | 6% per booking, no monthly fee |
| Xola | from 1.9% + $0.30 (cheaper at high ticket value) |
| Peek Pro | 6%, customer-paid |
| Rezdy | $49/mo + 1.75%/booking |
Here's the honest answer: at low order volume, buy the SaaS. A $24/mo booking tool or a $119/mo ordering platform is cheaper than anything custom, and you'll be live today instead of in six weeks.
The trade-off shows up as you scale. Per-transaction and per-seat fees are uncapped — they grow with your business forever. A flat retainer doesn't. At a System Starter ($150–250/mo) or Custom Portal ($350–600/mo) tier, the code is yours, there's no commission line on every order, and the team that built it answers a P1 outage in under two hours instead of routing you through a support ticket queue.
The real question to ask
Do the math on your actual order or booking volume against the commission or per-seat cost of the SaaS tool you're comparing against — that crossover point is the honest answer, not a sales pitch. If you're under it, a subscription tool is the right call and we'll tell you that. If you're over it, or if what you actually need is something these platforms don't offer (a private banquet booking form, a gear-rental waiver tied to a reservation), that's the conversation worth having.
